HARRISON, N.Y. - It was close to 10 years ago when Harrison's Dan Briem started working with the town's public library as a page. Since then, he's worked his way up to a full-time position as library clerk who also is the center's technology expert.
"I've always been familiar with technology," Briem said. "Libraries have to keep up with the times. They need to be aware of how people are getting information."
As the years progressed, Briem took on more responsibilities at the library and volunteered much of his time to help implement better technology. The library started a heavy push since Chernykh's arrival last July to implement better technology for residents. Briem is in charge of a new laptop rental system that launched alongside an e-reader campaign earlier this month.
"Libraries don't have a lot of money, so I just offered to help with the site," Briem said.
He operates the library's website and was referred to by Director Galina Chernykh as the library's genius.
"Without him, I don't know how we can function," Chernykh said. "He breaks the stereotype of a typical library worker."
Over the years, Briem said the greatest changes at the Harrison Library were an increased focus on technology.
"Everyone needs a central place to access information," Briem said. "Whether it's the Internet or physical books, it's all about access to information."
