The storms will be tied to a strong cold front moving through NY, NJ, CT, MA, PA, MD, and VA, according to the National Weather Service.
AccuWeather says the severe thunderstorm risk stretches from parts of Georgia and the Carolinas northward through New York state, western New England, and into part of southern Quebec.
That puts several major cities in or near the risk zone, including Washington, DC, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York City, and Montreal.
The most likely window for storms in much of the Daily Voice coverage area is late Sunday afternoon into Sunday night.
AccuWeather says the main threats will be high winds and flooding downpours. One or two of the strongest storms could also produce a brief tornado.
An AccuWeather forecast graphic shows the potential for localized damaging wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph in the Sunday-to-Sunday night severe thunderstorm zone.
The storms are not expected to last all day. AccuWeather says they should take up only a few hours in many areas.
Still, any thunderstorm can produce dangerous lightning, even if it does not reach severe limits. Outdoor plans should include a way to get inside quickly.
The National Weather Service also says there is a high risk of rip currents on Sunday at all Atlantic Ocean beaches. Swimmers should follow posted warnings and lifeguard instructions.
The system is expected to move quickly. Gradual clearing is expected overnight, setting up a mainly sunny and more comfortable day on Monday, June 15, continuing on Tuesday, June 16. Unsettled conditions are expected to return on Wednesday, June 17.
