The powerful storms that rolled through the county Wednesday night left trees down, thousands without power and roads closed around town. Tiger Mann, assistant director of public works for New Canann, says crews were out assesing the damage and working to reopen streets Thursday morning.
As of 10:30 a.m., the Department of Public Works had closed portions of four roads to clear debris: Lantern Ridge Road, South Bald Hill Road, North Bald Hill Road and North Wilton Road. They were also close to reopening Briscoe Road and Sheridan Drive. After clearing those roads, they were to begin cleaning roads with downed trees that were still passable. Our top criteria is getting roads opened, Mann said. After that well work on cleaning up the rest.
CL&P reported that most of those who lost power had it restored by 9 a.m. Still, nearly 500 customers were waiting for the electricity to be restored. United Illuminating reported just 79 outages in Fairfield. But on Wednesday night nearly 3,500 Fairfield residents were in the dark.
