Six dogs have been found mauled by coyotes in the area of Mountain Laurel Road this year.
“We’re urging dog owners to supervise their pets,” said Paul Miller, head of Fairfield Animal Control. “Especially at night because that’s when coyotes are most active.”
The most recent attack occurred June 6 on Mountain Laurel Road. A resident told police she found her pet beagle dead in her front yard. It appeared the dog had escaped from a fenced-in rear yard. Officers found the dog had injuries consistent with a coyote attack.
Other residents on Hillbrook Lane, Lindamir Lane, Richard Place and Galloping Hill Road have reported similar incidents the past five months. Coyotes also have been spotted in other areas of town, including the Lake Hills area and the Fairfield Beach area.
Fairfield Animal Control normally receives one or two reports of coyote attacks per year, Miller said. “We haven’t had this many in a while,” Miller added.
Coyotes are not known to attack humans and normally will leave pets alone when humans are around. When confronted with a coyote, you should attempt to frighten the animal by making loud noises and exhibiting aggressive behavior.
