MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. City Council member Richard Thomas said he will propose a resolution Tuesday at the councils meeting to preserve the beauty of Mount Vernon and engage residents in helping with the effort.
The plan comes on the heels of the City Council voting 4-1 in favor of declaring four houses on the south side of Mount Vernon unsafe.
Thomas proposed resolution has three components. First, he is asking the council to affirm the citys ownership over city-owned property. Second, the resolution states that the city desires to work with residents and community groups to beautify blight, enhance green space and empower the community to maintain and clean up public property. Finally, the City Council will take action to help preserve the city.
Based on widespread feedback, these communities need more ammunition to combat blight, Thomas said.
One of the groups the resolution targets is Habitat For Humanity, which has a green Restore building at 2 Cortland St. Jim Killoran, executive director of Habitat For Humanity of Westchester, is currently seeking volunteers to help with this effort.
Weve worked with the business community as well as the mayors office to get our store up and running and we want to do more for the community, Killoran said. We have thousands of people that come from all over that shop in Mount Vernon, so the nicer the neighborhoods are the more it will encourage people to come here.
The resolution will be discussed at the Aug. 7 City Council meeting and is expected to be voted on Aug. 8 at the City Councils legislative session.
