Cortlandt Ponders Business Friendly Code Changes

CORTLANDT, NY-- Two business-friendly changes to existing regulations will be the subject of separate public hearings before the Cortlandt Town Board next week.

The first hearing, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cortlandt Town Hall, will deal with a proposed amendment to the town's Zoning Code regarding the storage or display of goods outdoors. Currently, a section of Chapter 307 prohibits outdoor storage of goods and equipment, other than live plant material, boats, cars and above-ground pools. That includes items as basic as cases of soda or beer, or windshield washer fluid.

Town officials were asked last year to relax the rules a bit by several business owners, one in particular who wanted to showcase fruit and vegetables outside his store on Route 6. That business owner has since gone out of business.

The second hearing will center on the town's sign ordinance. The proposed revision to the ordinance would enable small businesses looking to change or put up a new sign to bypass the sometimes lengthy Planning Board process. Instead, their request would be handled administratively or by the town's Architectural Review Council.

The Town Board is in the process of phasing out billboards, which several members have considered eyesores for decades along routes 6, 202 and 9A. At one point the town even looked into buying the land where the billboards are erected to get rid of them quicker.
