Cortlandt Neighbors Notes

On Saturday, August 13, The Lighthouse Youth Theatre put on a production of Beauty and the Beast. Grace Jersey, 9, of Cortlandt Manor, performed in her seventh show with LYT. Under the direction of Alyssa Gomez, Grace played the role of Chip and came home to rave reviews on Facebook! Look for Grace this winter in Lighthouse's Junior Workshop production of Aladdin.

“Please.” “Thank you.” EYE CONTACT. “It’s nice to meet you!” “Which fork do I use?” How to behave in a movie. Cell phone etiquette. Business Attire. All of these are lessons we try to teach our kids and let’s face it, sometimes they don’t listen to US! So, it is with great excitement that I get to present a brand new business coming to our area!

Jeanne Doorley, a 16-year resident of Cortlandt Manor, is the owner of Etiquette Advantage, LLC and is a Certified Etiquette Consultant. Beginning in October 2011, classes will be taught at the Trinity-Boscobel United Methodist Church in Buchanan and will focus on teaching etiquette and dining programs to children, teens and young adults. Using an interactive, fun approach, classes emphasize leadership qualities and develop social and personal skills.

Jeanne says, “The families of our community are committed to providing their children with the necessary skills to propel them forward in life. I wanted to be able to give the children in our community every advantage when it came to working with other people.”

I will look forward to sharing Jeanne’s website and other info as we get closer to her grand opening!

This week’s get-away destination is shared by the Mahler Family ~ Don, Karie, Amiee & Benjamin of Croton. Niagara Falls, NY! Kari says, “As long as everyone is entertained the ride isn’t terribly painful!”

The Mahler’s stayed at a Holiday Inn a block from the falls! They took advantage of an Adventure Pass, which gave them discounts to the “must see” attractions: a boat ride on the Maid of the Mist, a look behind the falls, the Rapid Walk and the 4D movie Niagara’s Fury: the Creation of the Falls. In addition, the family went to MarineLand where they got the opportunity to touch whales. Everyone had a fabulous time despite it being THE hottest week of the year. After speaking to the locals who worked at the hotel the family got the scoop on where the best local places to eat were and saved themselves lots of money.

The kids LOVED the Maid of the Mist and they loved getting an opportunity to pet the Beluga whales. They would absolutely go back.

A group of 16 students from Hendrick Hudson High School visited China in July. The tour encompassed the usual famous sites, as well as some remote, yet breath-taking areas of rural China. The students were accompanied by teacher chaperones Debbie Cruikshank and John Annunziata. They began their adventure by visiting the familiar landmarks, such as Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and a fun excursion along the Great Wall. Next they proceeded to the modern day city of Xi’an, where they got to view the famous Terracotta army that remained buried in obscurity for thousands of years until accidently unearthed in 1974. Thousands of life-size warriors, horses and chariots have made this spot one of the world’s greatest archeological discoveries. A highlight was to meet Mr. Yang, the farmer who stumbled upon these treasures, and who is still treated like a celebrity at age 89.

The next area visited was the countryside surrounding the city of Guilin in Guangxi province. This region has been famous for centuries for its amazing landscape comprised of Karst-limestone Mountains, tranquil rivers, and terraced rice patties. This was a pleasant respite from the bustling cities visited earlier.

A final stay in Shanghai, the economic showcase of this emerging superpower, made this truly a remarkable experience for all.

The following students attended the trip: Isabel Baransky, Michael Cruikshank, Matt Dacher, Victoria Dolan, Kevin Jackson, Tara Kutzbach, Nicola Licata, Meghan Lynch, Danielle Mueller, Jack Reuter, Lenny Rutgliano, Nelson Truesler, Nick Vecci, Samantha Vredenburgh, Lauren Wheeler, and Asher Zinc.
