Cops Set Up Seatbelt Checkpoints

When you’re driving around town over the next couple of weeks, you might want to make sure your seatbelt is buckled if you haven’t already. The New Canaan Police department announced they will be participating in the nationwide “Click It or Ticket, A Safe Memorial Day Weekend" campaign. Cops will set up checkpoints throughout town between May 24 and June 6, to check and make sure drivers and passengers are following seatbelt laws.

Connecticut state law requires drivers and passengers in the front seats to wear safety belts at all times. Children must be in a car seat or restraint system if they are under 7 years old or 60 pounds. After that, children must wear seat belts, even in the back seat, until age 16.

“Safety belts are the most effective safety devices in vehicles today, and only take three seconds to buckle,” said Lt. Fred Pickering in a press release. He also advised parents to keep young children in the back seat, where they are 29 percent safer.
