Contested Stamford Development Gains Approval

STAMFORD, Conn. — After developer Nagi Osta made more than 25 concessions, his condominium and day-care proposal gained approval from Stamford’s Zoning Board on Monday night.

“It’s give and take in life, not just take,” Osta said after the plan was approved, 3-2. “I am very pleased to have this over.”

The approval gives Osta special permission to construct a 10-unit residential building with a child-care facility as well as a seven-unit residential building and to complete all necessary site improvements. The site runs from Maplewood Place to Bradley Place along High Ridge Road.

Before the vote, the board members went through the proposed changes and made modifications. Board Chair Tom Mills went through more than 100 resident emails and organized complaints, trying to find common ground between the emails and Osta to get the development approved.

The proposal was submitted to the Zoning Board last January and has cost a lot of money since then, Osta said. He said he can now go back to helping the community, which he believes he will do with the development.

“It’s OK. It is only money,” Osta said of his expenses to get the development approved.

Board approval took a long time because many nearby residents objected to the added noise and traffic that would come with the development. Residents were so upset over the development, a website was started and signs were put up opposing Osta.

Osta, who is also president of Nagi Jewelers, said he will take the next few weeks off from the project to focus on his business as Christmas approaches. He expects to start construction in spring.
