Emergency crews were called to Pittsburgh Obama Academy on North Highland Avenue just before 9 a.m. on Monday, June 15.

Construction workers were at the school performing work on the pool, where scaffolding had been erected, Pittsburgh Public Schools spokesperson Ebony Pugh said in a statement.

The incident happened around 9 a.m. while work was underway, according to Pugh.

"Arriving responders located the adult female at the bottom of the empty pool after she fell approximately thirty feet. The victim suffered traumatic injuries to her head, consistent with a fall of that height," the statement said.

The woman was transported by Pittsburgh EMS to a hospital in grave condition, officials said.

"She unfortunately succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital shortly after arrival," the statement continued.

Pugh said the woman worked for a contractor and was not employed by the school district.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office has not released her identity.

Pittsburgh police are investigating the fatal workplace accident.
