State Rep. Peggy Reeves may not be on the House Environment Committee, but the 143rd District Democrat nevertheless wins high marks from state environmentalists.

"I hope to take the lead on many issues for the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters," Reeves said. The organization has given Reeves another A-average on its annual scorecard. This year Reeves received a 90 percent from the CTLCV, five points lower than in 2009.

Supporting the CTLCV goes hand in hand with Reeves' belief that people need to be aware of environmental and energy issues. According to the CTLCV's Website, the organization "is a bipartisan, statewide, nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting Connecticut's environment by making it a priority for our elected leaders."

Reeves, whose district covers Wilton and Norwalk, would like to see the state Department of Environmental Protection get the resources needed to enforce regulations. Reeves described the DEP as "underfunded and understaffed for years."

Reeves said her district is the largest installer of alternative energy sources in the Northeast. She believes that turning to wind, solar and other energy sources will help the economy in Connecticut, which has the highest energy costs in the continental U.S.

"By supporting alternative energy sources we are addressing climate change and adding jobs to the state," Reeves said.

Reeves, who is completing her first term in the General Assembly, will be running for reelection in November against Republican candidate Gail Lavielle. Lavielle serves on the Energy Commission in Wilton and on the Connecticut Public Transportation Commission.
