CofC Members Laud Lieberman

Sen. Joseph Lieberman kicked off his speech to the Stamford Chamber of Commerce Monday by affectionately leading a round of applause for his wife, Hadassah, who accompanied him.

Lieberman's audience -- which included small business employees Gail Slifkin and Kristie Judge – showed Lieberman the same appreciation when he said he favors prolonging the Bush tax cuts.

"I believe that we should extend all of the so-called Bush tax cuts for another year at least," he said.

After the event, Slifkin and Judge commended Lieberman.

"I thought it was excellent," said Slifkin, a sales representative for Stamford-based ServiceMaster Clean, which provides disaster restoration services.

"I appreciated him being on board about keeping Bush's tax cuts," said Judge, the company's office manager.

"With the tax cuts, he was right on point," said Slifkin, adding, "He addressed my issues [of concern] throughout."

Lieberman, a Stamford native, was the keynote speaker for the chamber's 23rd annual meeting, which attracted well over 200 attendees.

His talk centered on the economy. In addition to the tax cuts, Lieberman also supported separate measures taken at the end of the Bush administration and beginning of the Obama administration to bolster the ailing financial sector.

"I believe that our current economic situation would be worse today if the federal government had not taken aggressive, controversial action," he said.

Reducing the federal debt is important for the economy, as is focusing on export growth, an area in which Connecticut has seen a 16 percent increase during the first half of this year, he said.

"So we should be doing everything we can to encourage and support that trend."
