Clowning Around: The Big Parade

We couldn't have asked for a more perfect day for the UBS Holiday Parade in downtown Stamford. It wasn't too cold, and a bright warm sun was shining on clowns, balloons and thousands of spectators of all ages lining the streets.

All the work and preparations we clowns put in finally came to life. My first impression when I walked into the setup tent, however, was how many people were involved in managing this first-class event.

By 10 a.m., all 50 clowns were in the tent, checking each other's costumes and makeup while playing the games and skits we had practiced together for two weeks. The atmosphere was electric, but to say we were nervous would have been an understatement.

My clown group was the first one out on the route — even before the official parade started – to warm up the crowd.

Bouncing and strutting while playing along with the many spectators lining the route was amazing. I've never seen so many people happy and smiling in one place. Clowns do make people smile, no matter what is going on in their lives.

Kids jumped out in the street to hug us, give a "high-five" or just stare in amazement as a funny person in a crazy colorful outfit danced around.

Moms and dads asked to take our picture with their kids. Even the police and security got in the act. It's quite a feeling when thousands of people you don't know are waving, laughing and reaching out to you.

After a mile and a half of "clowning around," I had conflicting feelings: Joy because of all the good feelings, smiles and happiness we spread to so many people, but sad because it was over for the year. As for this first-time clown, I slept well.
