Chimney Sweep Arrest Sparks Warning

The arrest of a chimney cleaner who was carrying a list of Wilton addresses has prompted a warning to residents from the Wilton PD. The man, an employee of Top Sweep, Inc., was arrested in Stratford for violating home improvement laws and second-degree larceny.

Lt. Donald Wakeman said Wilton police have received complaints about chimney sweepers in the past, but none recently. The Wilton police report did not say if Top Sweep has already been to Wilton or was planning to.

Stratford officials said Top Sweep employees were going door to door offering to clean chimneys for low prices. Then they would tell the homeowner there were problems and they owed more. According to Stratford building inspectors, the work was "substandard and unnecessary."

A Top Sweep who would only identify himself as "The Good Guy" said all employees have the proper registration to clean chimneys. He would not comment on the arrest except to say, "It's too bad that one bad apple had to spoil the whole bunch."

He also said that if customers were unhappy with their work they should contact Top Sweep and it would be taken care of.

If Top Sweep has done work in your home, Wilton Police asked that you call (203) 834-6260.
