The frightening ordeal unfolded around 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, when a woman stopped to deliver packages using her personal Jeep Grand Cherokee, according to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.
Her young son was asleep in the back seat when she stepped out briefly to make a delivery, Small said.
During that time, a thief jumped into the SUV and drove away.
After traveling about two blocks, the suspect stopped along the 2900 block of Stillman Street and removed the sleeping child from the vehicle, police said.
The suspect then drove off again before abandoning the Jeep roughly a half-mile away near Westmoreland Street and West Hunting Park Avenue, investigators said.
Neighbors spotted the boy alone on the street shortly afterward and called police.
Officers found the child unharmed and safely reunited him with his family, Small said.
No arrests have been announced.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
