Rye Neck made two quick outs in the second inning before prolonging it longer than visiting Albertus Magnus would have liked. The second-seeded Panthers erupted for six runs with two outs and went on to a 7-3 win over fifth-seeded Albertus Magnus in a Section 1 Class B semifinal. Rye Neck will play second-seeded Valhalla in the championship game Saturday at 4 p.m. at Nanuet High School in Rockland County.
The girls didnt give up, Rye Neck coach Joan Spedafino said. They kept their composure and kept working hard.
Lauren Bradley initiated the two-out spree with a walk, Kirsten Tamucci was safe on an error and Nickole Morgan walked, loading the bases. Marisa Bella lined a single to left field, scoring Bradley and Tamucci and Jessica Calvini followed, ripping a double to left, bringing in Morgan and Bella. Calvini came home on a Vanessa Laise single and Nicole Pineda scored the sixth run on an error. Calvini finished with a five-hitter and struck out five. Calvini, who was called for two illegal pitches, including her first toss of the game, would not be shaken. Calvini had a record day, becoming the winningest pitcher in the softball programs history with no. 57, surpassing Juliana Labella. Calvini now has the most strikeouts -- 662.
