Calif. School District Challenges New Canaan

New Canaan, the gauntlet has been thrown down! Following school board chairman Nick Williams’ remark that New Canaan has better schools than Manhattan Beach, Calif., the district out west wants to settle things in a “friendly series of competitions.”

Manhattan Beach Unified School District board of trustees president Bill Fournell suggested boys and girls volleyball matches in New Canaan, lacrosse matches in California and a model United Nations competition at a neutral location. “That will give us both a good excuse to visit and exchange notes about the importance of public education,” Fournell said.

The flap arose when Manhattan Beach was ranked first for education by GreatSchools.org among towns with a median home price of $800,000 or more. New Canaan’s second place ranking did not stop Williams from saying “we have a better school system.”

“We are proud to be in the great company of the New Canaan school district,” Fournell said. “In fact, we think we've found our sister district, only the sun rises over your ocean and sets over ours.”

Williams said Friday he wants to find out more about Manhattan Beach schools and would like the districts to establish a relationship. “Like us, they’re a terrific school system,” he said.

He’s also interested in the challenges Fournell proposed. “I think it’s a great idea to have competitions. Maybe we can get their town to pay for it,” Williams said.
