BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. The Briarcliff Manor Public Library wants residents who know someone suffering with dementia to understand that they are not alone.
The Library will host a Dementia Care Workshop at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Briarcliff Manor. Daniel Kaplan, a gerontological clinical social worker with expertise in Alzheimers disease and dementia, will walk residents through the basic steps of dementia care and communication.
Coordinator Shelley Glick said she knows there are residents living with family members who have dementia and organized the event to help them get answers.
Dementia is an extremely complicated disorder, Glick said. Family members helping to care for loved ones should not have to learn these skills through trial and error.
Because dementia can be caused in a variety of ways and affect those from many different backgrounds, Glick said a majority of Kaplans time would be devoted to answering questions and providing direct assistance to residents.
