“We are so appreciative of the selflessness and dedication of our soldiers serving abroad,” said club adviser Karen McCarthy. “The Briarcliff High School American Red Cross Club hopes to brighten the day of the platoon that receives our care packages as a small token of our gratitude.”
Each club member adopted a U.S. troop deployed in Afghanistan for nine months through the program. The students began soliciting donations in front of Stop and Shop in Ossining and Value Drugs in Briarcliff Manor on Veterans Day.
Briarcliff High's lobby also featured a donation box for several weeks. Students made cards at the Maresca table's holiday card making station.
Members of the club contacted Girl Scout troops for donations and cards expressing gratitude for their service.
More than $500 and 90 pounds of donations were packaged before the holiday break and shipped to Afghanistan using money solicited through club fundraisers.
