Brian Philip Post, of Ringwood, died Friday, Oct. 23, in a crash involving his motorcycle, a Ford Transit van, and a Jeep Wrangler near Hamburg Turnpike and Black Oak Ridge Road around 7:14 a.m., authorities said.

Post, who worked in maintenance for NJ Transit in Paterson, was the son of Town of Goshen Police Chief James Post, according to a GoFundMe launched to support his family.

The Town of Goshen Police Department said Brian was heading home after finishing a 12-hour shift when he was killed.

"Our Town of Goshen Police Department family is grieving alongside Chief James Post and his family after the tragic loss of his son, Brian Philip Post, 36," the department said in a Facebook post.

Brian was born in Middletown, NY, and lived there before moving to Ringwood 25 years ago, according to the fundraiser.

He is survived by his father, James Post, of Wurtsboro, NY; his mother, Kathryn Ryan, of Ringwood; and siblings Connor Dunn, Shannon Dunn, and Alhana Post.

James Post served more than 31 years with the New York State Police and six years on active duty with the U.S. Navy. He also served as a Mamakating town councilman, according to fundraiser organizer Matt O'Connell.

The police department said the chief and his family would be taking time to grieve privately. In a message shared by the department, Chief Post said:

"I’ll do my best to move forward and come back when I’m ready. Losing Brian has changed me, and I know I won’t be the same. Thank you for your support and for giving my family and me time to grieve."

O'Connell, who worked with James Post during his time with the state police, organized the fundraiser to help the family with funeral expenses and immediate living costs.

"There are simply no words to describe the pain of losing a child, especially in such a sudden and heartbreaking way," O'Connell wrote.

Brian was taken to Chilton Medical Center following the crash, where he was pronounced dead, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Wayne Police Chief Joseph Rooney said.

The drivers of the van and Jeep remained at the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
