Book Exhibit Splashes into Library

Summer and water. They go hand in hand, with the one often providing welcome relief from hot, hazy days of the other. For those who are nowhere near water when temperatures soar, Karen Romano Young and other Connecticut authors/illustrators can provide an engulfing substitute. They're part of Ferguson Library's water-themed August book exhibit, which coincides with the library's "Make a Splash ... Read!" summer reading theme.

"Across the Wide Ocean" is Young's contribution to the exhibit. It "follows several travelers as they find their way around the ocean, telling where they're going, why they're headed there, and how they navigate," said Young. Other featured works are "Shells! Shells! Shells!" by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace, "The Seaside Switch" by Kathleen V. Kudlinski, "Uncharted Waters" by Leslie Bulion and "Manuel and the Lobsterman" by Cat Urbain.

The books will be on display throughout August. In addition to their common water theme, each work attempts to enhance children's perspectives in an entertaining way.

"I wanted kids to realize that different animals and humans on different vessels have unique approaches to the problem of getting from here to there," said Young, whose characters include a baby sea turtle, a blue shark, a whale mother and calf and a scientist and his family. "I wanted kids to know that scientists don't know everything about how animals navigate. I think the questions the scientists ask are fascinating. And I wanted to get kids imagining things outside their scope of experience."

Young penned "Across the Ocean" in 2007. Her latest book, "Doodlebug," was released this year.
