Police responded to the Union Street building after the threat was received and immediately began an investigation.
“We have received a bomb threat during dismissal time,” district officials wrote in a message to parents. “As a safety precaution, the building is currently on lockdown, and Hackensack Police are on the scene conducting an investigation.”
Parents were urged not to come to the school while police worked to secure the area.
“All students and staff are safe and following emergency protocols,” officials said.
A follow-up message from the district approximately 40 minutes later confirmed the lockdown was lifted after law enforcement determined there was “no viable threat” to the school community.
“Regular dismissal procedures are now resuming,” the district said.
All YMCA and Boys & Girls Club programs continued as scheduled, but Hackensack Middle School–based activities were canceled for the day.
“We sincerely thank you for your patience and understanding during this situation,” school officials said.
Hackensack Police Chief Michael Antista released the following statement:
"At approximately 2:15 pm, the middle school received a phone call reporting a threat in the vicinity of the school. The school was placed on lockdown and searched with the assistance of the Bergen County Sheriff's Office. No credible threat was located, and the incident is currently under investigation."
