Blumenthal Keeps It Brief

Richard Blumenthal’s brevity indicated he knew why the crowd had come to the Palace theater in Stamford Monday. While they might end up voting for him to be their next U.S. senator, the members of the audience, many of whom  represented community organizations, had come to see Michelle Obama.

Dutifully, Blumenthal kept his comments short. He briefly blasted Republican opponent Linda McMahon, mentioned his record as attorney general, and praised the first lady.

Obama’s “courage and leadership” are admirable qualities, said Blumenthal. “I am so grateful that she’s here today.”

Obama was in Stamford to support Blumenthal and his campaign. He faces a tough challenge from McMahon, who has poured well over $20 million into her campaign so far.

“My opponent may think that you can buy this election, but we know that Connecticut wants an election, not an auction,” said Blumenthal. He added, “My opponent has spent her lifetime building her future. I have spent my lifetime helping families build their future.”

Last month President Barack Obama visited Stamford to raise funds for Blumenthal’s campaign. The event garnered about $400,000.

The first lady’s appearance at Monday’s rally was preceded by a fundraising luncheon. Before she stepped onstage to a cheering crowd, Blumenthal made reference to his financial underdog status in an emotional  tone that, for him, is rare.

“I may not have tens of millions of dollars,” he said, “but I have something money can’t buy. I have you.”
