Bluefish fall to Lancaster Barnstormers

It takes 10 innings to decide hard fought contest

By PAUL HERRMANN (Bridgeport) – The Bridgeport Bluefish (17-26, 39-74) were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers (20-21, 59-52), 4-3 in 10 innings on Thursday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The Bluefish scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Casper Wells, which scored J.R. Towles and then Ramon Castro scored from third base on a passed ball by Lancaster catcher Keith Castillo. Lancaster then scored their first run of the game on a solo home run by Brett Carroll. The Barnstormers would then take the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Reegie Corona and on a sacrifice to left field by Yusuke Kajimoto, which was caught on a diving catch by Bridgeport left-fielder Fred Lewis. The Bluefish then tied the game on an RBI single by Wells in the bottom of the eighth inning, which scored Ramon Castro and it appeared that Bridgeport had taken the lead, but pinch-runner Mike Richard was called out on an extremely close play at home plate. After Bridgeport stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, Lancaster then went ahead in the top of the tenth inning on a solo home run by Cole Garner. Bridgeport starting pitcher Tomo Ohka was forced to settle for a no decision going seven innings allowing three runs, nine hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Bluefish reliever Tim Gustafson (2-5) took the loss after giving up the home run to Garner in the top of the 10th inning. Lancaster starting pitcher Shunsuke Watanabe was also forced to settle for a no decision going six and one-third innings giving up two runs, eight hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Barnstormers’ closer Jason Urquidez (4-1) picked up the win after pitching a perfect 10th inning. For the Bluefish, Wells and James Simmons had three hits each. The Bluefish and Lancaster will play game two of their four-game series tomorrow night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Bluefish and Barnstormers square off in a Friday night matchup.
