A Mass was said Monday for William "Bill" Macchio of Stamford, a World War II veteran who was very proud of having served in the Normandy Invasion. He died Sept. 17 at age 89.
Born Aug. 31, 1921, he served in the Army for four years during the war and was a member of the 965th Engineer Company. Macchio had a gift for mechanics and was able to fix just about anything. He owned and operated Stamford-based State Automotive Repair, a towing and garage business, for 45 years. His loved to take photographs, fish, hunt, travel, work in his garden and spend time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Antoinette Reidy Macchio; three daughters, Patricia DeMatteo and her husband Michael of Hamden; Frances Foucher and her husband David of Derry, N.H., and Susan Salvatore and her husband Jeffrey of Stamford, a sister, grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
