Bicyclist Mario Morales Aquino, 42, was critically injured in a collision with a commercial garbage truck Saturday morning near Stamford Hospital, police said.
Aquino, of West Avenue, suffered "life-threatening injuries that required emergency surgery" at Stamford Hospital, police said. He remained in the hospital's critical care unit.
The operator of the truck, Lorenzo Flores, 47, of West Haven, was not injured. The collision occurred at about 6 a.m. Saturday on West Broad Street at the hospital driveway. When they collided, the City Carting garbage truck was traveling west on West Broad Street, attempting to turn left into the hospital driveway, and the bicycle was traveling east on West Broad Street.
The Stamford Police Department's Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad was investigating under the direction of Sgt. Andrew Gallagher and Officer Jeffrey Booth. The Connecticut State Police's Traffic Service Unit inspected the garbage truck at the scene. No charges had been filed.
