WILTON, Conn. Although it was more than a week late in coming, Wilton's first day of school went off without any major problems, Superintendent Gary Richards said Tuesday.
Richards, along with Assistant Superintendent Tim Canty, visited each of Wilton's schools and dozen of individual classrooms to welcome back students and staff.
"It felt calm and very businesslike for Day 1," said Richards. "I was impressed with how calm and professional it was."
Richards credits teachers and staff members and their level of preparation for ensuring a smooth opening day especially on a day when the weather did not cooperate. "Even with the rain all the principals reported that all buses had arrived on time," said Richards.
Whether the last day for students will arrive on time is still unknown, said Richards. He intends to discuss the issue with the Board of Education to develop a calendar for the remainder of the school year.
"Right now, we are where we were at the end of January having used five snow days," said Richards. "Some years we've averaged only one or two snow days. We're hoping last year was an aberration."
