The anonymous post appeared Wednesday, Nov. 26, in Facebook's “Bethpage LI Community Watch Group,” where the resident described a tense encounter with a man who came to her door despite a clearly displayed “No Soliciting” sign.
According to the post, the man claimed he wanted to conduct a “brief survey” about siding and roofing but became insistent when she declined.
“I had a weird experience today that I wanted to share,” the post reads. “What I found odd is that it is a dark, gloomy day and he was wearing a cap and sunglasses. Wondering if he's legit or just trying to scope out our houses.”
It was not immediately clear whether the man was affiliated with any legitimate company, but he eventually left, as seen in the poster's doorbell camera footage.
“Call 911 — looks like an unsavory character,” one commenter wrote. Another said solicitors should be honoring the sign and noted that contractors in the Town of Oyster Bay are supposed to carry an ID card issued by the town.
Others shared their own safety advice:
- “Ask him to hold on and call the cops.”
- “Close the door.”
- “Don’t even answer the door for those people.”
One commenter offered a simple trick for ending uncomfortable encounters: “If anyone comes to your door, just say ‘I don’t own, I rent.’ They leave immediately.”
