Benjamin Dresbach, 23, was found guilty in connection with the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Trevor Van Devander in January 2025, according to the Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office on Monday, Aug. 24.
On Jan. 13, 2025, prosecutors say police were called to the 3900 block of Franklin Street in Kensington when Dresbach called 911 to report that he had shot his friend inside.
Upon arrival, first responders found Van Devander in the basement of the home suffering from a gunshot wound following an altercation with Dresbach.
Investigators noted that Dresbach used an illegal short-barreled rifle and shot Van Devander in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Van Devander was expecting to welcome his second child later this year when he was gunned down.
Authorities announced on Monday that Dresbach was convicted by a jury of:
- Second-degree depraved-heart murder;
- Use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence;
- Possession of a short-barreled rifle.
When he is sentenced in December, the Kensington resident faces up to 65 years in prison.
