Another potential candidate for Fairfields top government spot came forward this week. Robert Bellitto, current vice-chair of the Board of Finance, filed his intent to form an exploratory committee for a run in this November's election for First Selectman Friday. But in a statement released Wednesday, Bellitto stressed that he has not officially announced his candidacy yet, and would not until after he finishes budget talks as part of the finance board.
When that process is completed, I will turn my attention to the run for First Selectman, Bellitto said. Fairfield is facing enormous challenges in the weeks, months and years ahead. I will be there to help my hometown meet these challenges and put Fairfield First.
Bellitto is the second possible Republican challenger to Democratic incumbent Kenneth Flatto. District 1 RTM member David Becker started an exploratory committee of his own in January, but had also not formally entered the race. Flatto first won the First Selectmans seat in 1997, but lost after his first term to John Metsopoulus in 1999. Two years later, Flatto regained the seat, and has been reelected three more times since.
Professionally, Bellitto is an attorney with Bellitto & Bellitto LLC, based on Black Rock Turnpike. He has been a member of the Board of Finance since 2007, and his fellow board members chose to keep him as vice chair for a second year. He has also served on the North Stratfield Elementary and Fairfield Woods Middle School PTAs, and coaches a team for Fairfield National Little League.
