Beleaguered Wilton Post Office Draws Praise

The condition and service at Wilton’s Post Office is so bad, says Wilton First Selectman Bill Brennan, that he has gone there in person to discuss the problems with Postmaster Angel Rodriguez. But residents such as Philip Sharlach say the post office is fine just the way it is.

“I hope they don’t shut it down. ... It’s a great service to the town,” said Sharlach, who uses the post office several times a week. Wiltonian Jane Johnson agreed but said sometimes only one clerk is working when there should be two. Johnson, who does not go to there often, said the line is sometimes six to eight people deep. But that is rare, she said, and it usually only happens near the holidays. “I never had any problems,” Johnson said, “I am just a happy camper, I guess.”

Brennan first expressed his discontent with the post office during the Board of Selectmen meeting Feb. 28, saying that residents complained that it was dirty, did not have enough clerks and machines were broken. He said he wrote two letters to Hernandez expressing his concerns. “I am going to continue to be the squeaky wheel,” Brennan said at the time, although the post office is not under the first selectman’s authority.

After not getting a response to his letters, Brennan visited the post office, he told the selectmen at their March 7 meeting. He said he learned that Hernandez’s staff has been cut from 14 people to eight. Hernandez also promised to improve the service and conditions of the post office. “Certainly Hernandez has the right attitude,” Brennan said.
