On Thursday, Oct. 6, Fiona Mitchell spoke at the Bedford Free Library about the hot topic of mulching your leaves rather than using blowers and carting them away. Leave Leaves Alone! is a new Bedford-based initiative, in partnership with Bedford 2020, designed to educate homeowners and landscape services about using leaves as mulch rather than removing them from lawns.
In addition to Ms. Mitchell, several pro-mulching local landscapers spoke at the event. David Duarte noted that he has successfully mulched leaves for about 20 years, and his firm does landscaping for some of the top horticulturalists in the Bedford area. Tim Downey and Anthony Vulpone also spoke about how they have more recently converted and are convinced that the new practice has simplified their work and saved them both time and money. Ann Jaffe-Holmes, of the Greenburgh Nature Center, discussed the county-wide effort to convert residents to leaf mulching, which is catching on in communities from Bronxville to Bedford.
