St. Matthews Church had an entertaining College Jamboree Saturday, featuring a capella singing groups from Yale, Princeton, Williams, Amherst, Vassar and Trinity. The day began with an all-parish picnicat which the Vassar Night Owls, Amherst Zumbyes, Trinity Pipes, Williams Ephlats and Yale Whiffenpoofs all performed.
Highlights were when the Vassar woman sang Were Saving Ourselves for Yale and got a big laugh from the audience, said organizer and parishioner Douglas Kim. The Whiffs later inserted Vassar into its version of George Bensons On Broadway.
The well-attended evening concert was held in the Fellowship Hall at St. Matthews, a venue widely known for its fabulous acoustics.
The high point of the night was when a Princeton Tigertone named Ben Butler 14 sang the Beatles classic, The Long and Winding Road, said Kim. I think many people will tell you he was the star of the evening.
The groups from Trinity and Williams were co-ed and sang more contemporary material, whereas the Whiffenpoofs and Tigertones sang more traditional songs. A new tradition began at this years concert, with the presentation of the Rectors Cup, a trophy decorated with the Bedford Oak and the Bedford Peace Cross. The trophy was not based on the quality of the groups performance, but rather a quirky, arbitrary prize selected in a drawing. The trophy, designed by La Tulipe of Mt. Kisco, was made of solid chocolate. Anyone associated with the winning school was welcome to break off a piece.
An event was held on Oct. 2 at the Waccabuc home of Ingrid and John Connolly to connect Nan Hayworth, U.S. Representative for New Yorks 19th Congressional District, with her supporters and constituents. Most attendees were from Bedford, Katonah and Pound Ridge, including Laurie and Paul Sturz, April Foley and former U.S. Rep. Sue Kelly and her husband, Ed. Hayworth gave a brief update of her progress since the 2010 election. She serves on the Committee for Financial Services and three related subcommittees.
