The festivities were still going strong when we arrived at the John Jay Homestead Jamboree on July 4th. The event began at 11 a.m. with the customary reading of the Declaration of Independence on the Homesteads front steps, followed by fife and drum music and an opportunity for all present to reenact the signing of the Declaration. The crowd then moved on to other activities, including dog agility training demonstrations, hayrides, colonial games and races, a petting zoo, a dog costume parade, a patriotic cake decorating contest and more.
When checking out the SPCA tent, where there were several dogs up for adoption, one sure winner was Thatchera one-year-old Border Collie mix. He loves kids and other dogs, said volunteer Trista Norton. Hes also had the advantage of training sessions, including agility training, at the Port Chester Obedience and Training Center.
The last band of the day featured Bedford resident and guitarist Abbott Fleur, president of the Bedford-Armonk Rotary Club, who helped organize the Jamboree. Hayrides were organized by the Bedford Riding Lanes Association. A bee-keeping booth was set up by D.J. Havercamp, a local beekeeper, and delicious grilled hotdogs, popcorn, ice cream and other refreshments were available throughout the day. As Havercamp said, You cant have Independence Day without hotdogs. He also noted that there had been a steady stream of visitors all day long, with at least 20 hayrides taking place down the Farm Lane and back.
Another special feature was the Marchers of Americorp NCCC, who stopped off at the Jamboree during a reenactment of the 700-mile march of American and French troops under Washington and Rochambeau from Providence, RI to Yorktown, VA. The group will cover the entire distance on foot, from June 18 to October 19, 2011. To find out more about the Marchers visit www.livinghistoryed.org, email [email protected] or call (315) 751-2011.
Coming up this weekend is the Pound Ridge Town-Wide Tag Sale, primarily for Pound Ridge residents to sell their wares. However, since we live near the town line, Joan Silbersher, owner of Antiques & Tools in Scotts Corners, OKd our participation. To get a copy of the Tag Sale map - our location is off of Loop Road - stop by Antiques & Tools and make a whole weekend of searching for hidden treasures!
