Bedford Man Turns Copper Into Gold

BEDFORD, N.Y. - Many people may know him by his company’s name, Tommie Copper, but that may not be a bad thing as far Tom Kallish is concerned.

The buzz around the Tommie Copper brand of compression sleeves continues to grow and Kallish, a Bedford resident, is pleased with the momentum the company has gained since its website opened in May.

“Sales have been grown 40 percent each month,” Kallish said. “It’s August 5 and we’ve already surpassed July’s sales in five days.”

Ads for the line, which features support sleeves for ankles, calves, elbows and knees, feature television personality, Montel Williams. The sleeves are made form a lightweight material and are infused with copper, which act as a natural healing catalyst for the human body, according to Kallish.

Kallish, a veteran of the textile industry, said he was motivated to form Tommie Copper due to his own problems finding compression sleeves. Although there are sleeves already on the market, Kallish said he found them bulky and could only wear them for limited time.

“There are zero other products out there that can be worn for long periods of time,” Kallish said. “We are the only one.”

The brand was featured on QVC a few weeks ago and experienced a good amount of sales success.

“We doubled what they wanted,” Kallish said.

Kallish said the company’s current board includes Peter Hunsinger, publisher of GQ Magazine; Chris Meloni, an actor known for his role as Elliot Stable on the television series Law and Order: SVU and Malcolm Robinson.

“The first thing a guy like me does is surround himself with people who are smarter than him in their areas of expertise,” Kallish said.

Kallish is hopeful that Tommie Copper will grow to become a $5 million company by the end of the year.
