Compo Beach hasn't become an anything-goes party zone just because the sand isn't getting raked quite as often. Parks and Recreation Director Stuart McCarthy warned sand and surf aficionados to be mindful of the rules.
Our South Beach picnic area at Compo is the designated area for alcohol consumption, said McCarthy in a released statement. It is not permitted anywhere else the main beach, pavilion or playground area.
Compo is one of the few beaches in Fairfield County where visitors can enjoy a casual drink while relaxing under the sun. However, McCarthy's staff is seeing more and more violations as drinkers are playing fast and loose with the rules.
We're seeing glass bottles, which are prohibited anywhere on the beach, used openly and guests drinking alcoholic beverages in full view of other beach-goers, said McCarthy.
McCarthy's crews will step up enforcement. Violators will get a warning and if their behavior continues, the next step involves the Westport Police Department. That could result in a $99 fine.
These regulations are designed to assure all visitors can enjoy Compo to the fullest extent, said McCarthy.
