Beach Advisory in Effect for New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. –  Residents of Glen Island Park said they were never given a message from the county’s health department advising people not to use the water of the city’s beaches and marinas for recreation.

Unaware of a sewage leak in the water that began Monday morning, children and their families enjoyed a day of rowing. A couple went out for jet skiing Monday afternoon. And others were fishing along the shores of Glen Island Park.

The Health Department is asking people to avoid direct contact with the water through Tuesday. The areas that are advised of the sewage spill include Wright Island Marina, Castaways Yacht Club, Imperial Yacht Club, Neptune Boat Club, New York Athletic Club, Snug Cove, Huguenot Yacht Club, Beckwith Point and Glen Island Park.

John Begley, a catch-and-release fisherman, said past sewage leaks have made him wary of eating the fish he catches.

“This is an on-going thing, and people at Hudson Park get it more than anybody,” he said.

Hudson Park is one of the closest recreational areas to the New Rochelle Sewage Plant off Le Fevres Lane.

Dominick Agostino said he comes to the park every day to relax. Still, Agostino found it shocking that no officials have informed him or his friends.

“Nobody ever mentioned anything to us,” he said, relaxing on a park bench.
