It turns out pesticides can lurk anywhere, even in the most idyllic of spots. For over 30 years, The Bartlett Arboretum has served as Stamford residents' go-to spot for communing with nature. But recent soil samples taken there in conjunction with a building renovation revealed the presence of pesticides, prompting Mayor Michael A. Pavia to order a a Phase I Environmental Assessment of the Brookdale Road property.
"It appears that no environmental evaluation of the site was ever conducted before or since acquiring the property, so I am ordering that work to be done now," Mayor Pavia said.
The city acquired the property from the state in 2002. Environmental audits examine past uses of a property for the purpose of assessing environmental conditions and compliance with environmental regulations. They address a wide range of activities and areas, such as buildings and building sites, past activities and uses and industrial and commercial developments. Phase I Environmental assessments are most often used as part of real estate transactions.
