PEEKSKILL, NY - City police cracked down on an establishment they said was offerening female companionship - for a price.
The El Sabor Latino restaurant at 933 South Street was charged with several violations on Nov. 12 at 11:25 p.m. after Police Sergeant Len Mignini and Police Officer Carl DeMarco, while working the Anti-Crime Patrol, noticed suspicious activity in the establishment.
Several patrons were entering and exiting through the back door of the establishment and upon further investigation they determined several females were in the bar dancing with patrons for a fee, police said.
The practice, commonly referred to as mingling, involves females dancing and socializing with male customers who purchase them small drinks at an inflated price, according to police spokesman Lt. Eric Johansen.
"What they do is charge [patrons] full price for a small glass or nip bottle of liquor and the girl and the bartender split the profit," Johansen said. "This kind of behavior is a slippery slope that can lead to prostitution."
Police cited the establishment for employing security personnel who had not been state certified and a referral was made to the building department due to the fact the front door was locked and unable to be used as an entrance or exit. The corporation was cited for the offenses and a representative is due in city court on Dec. 19.
