Back-to-School Checkups

August is the best time to start thinking about a back-to-school checkup for your child. Also known as a well-child visit, these appointments provide a thorough exam to make sure that your child is physically and emotionally ready for the classroom.

What will happen during the appointment?

During the appointment, the clinician will perform a physical exam which includes a vital signs check. They will review all immunizations that your child should have received, perform hearing, vision, and mental health screenings, and take a look to see if your child is reaching their developmental milestones. An athletic physical can also be performed if your child participates in sports.

How should I prepare for the appointment?

To prepare for your child’s appointment, be sure to bring:

  • Any required school paperwork or forms
  • A current list of medications your child is taking
  • Updates to your child’s or your family’s medical history
  • Any questions or concerns you’d like to discuss with the clinician

What you need to know:

It’s best to schedule your child’s back-to-school checkup early – ideally 4 to 6 weeks before school starts to avoid the late summer rush. It’s also helpful to reset your child’s bedtime and wake-up routines 1 or 2 weeks before school starts so they are prepared and rested when they head back to school. And finally, remember that your child’s backpack should weigh no more than 20% of their body weight to prevent shoulder and back strain.
