NORWALK, Conn. An artillery shell about a foot in length was found on a trail behind Cranbury Elementary School Monday, a day before school opened. The Stamford Police bomb squad was called to deal with the possibly live round. A hazardous device technician placed the shell in a containment box and removed it from the woods. There has been no word on whether or not the ordinance was live.
Norwalk Police said the shell came from World War II. "It's not a training round, that's for sure," said Officer Stephen Jaeger, a World War II buff, looking at a photo of the shell.
