Armonk Library Hosts Self-Publishing Workshop

ARMONK, N.Y. - Shelley Gilbert, a self-published author who won an Eric Hoffer award for Swimming Naked with Jellyfish, her first self-published book, will hold a workshop at the North Castle Public Library on March 3 at 2 p.m. to help prospective authors with their self-publishing projects.

Gilbert, who has self-published seven fiction and non-fiction books, will hold a Q&A session in which attendees can discuss specific books ideas. She will offer tips on how to choose online publishers, how to market books online, how to price books online, how to design book covers, select fonts and more.

She said writers should find three digital publishers and research them before choosing the best one. The top three today are CreateSpace, Lulu and AuthorHouse, she said, but there are new ones that can be considered. Writers can create blogs and websites to market their books with WordPress, a blog and web hosting service.

“There’s a clear path to self-publishing that changes every day and it’s a lot of work,” she said.

Gilbert has taught a class at Westchester Community College and other locations but said she’s been turned down at her home town library in Ossining and other places.

“Many organizations don’t understand self-publishing and are unwilling to accept it,” she said. “But it’s the best way to publish today. We’re no longer at the mercy of traditional agents and publishers who treat writers with disrespect.”
