WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Tiny Salina Colon had just run in one of the biggest races of her young and promising track career, finishing the 1,500-meter run in just more than 5 minutes in Friday's Section 1 state qualifying track meet at White Plains High School. And she was wanting more.
"This my first time at state qualifying here, and I wanted to do well," the slim freshman said. "I'm just starting out. I want to get better and be one of the top runners."
Colon hugged the fence that separated the athletes from fans and talked about competing against the best runners in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, including Bronxville's Mary Cain, who set a new state record of 4:16.5 in the event.
"I hope I can get stronger and better," Colon said. "This is my only sport. I always liked to run. Mary Cain is so amazing, and she makes it look so easy.
