The FDA posted Wakefern Food Corp.’s recall of select Wholesome Pantry Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce on Tuesday, Sept. 22. The company said routine FDA testing found elevated patulin levels in the product.
Patulin is a substance produced by molds that can grow on damaged or bruised apples. It can also turn up in foods made from affected fruit.
The recall covers 23-ounce plastic jars with UPC code 04119005677 and a best-by date of June 16, 2027. The apple sauce was distributed through ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Gourmet Garage, and Fairway Market.
Wakefern said the amount found in the recalled apple sauce exceeded food safety limits. Those limits are intended to guard against potential health concerns from elevated exposure over time. The company said consumers should not eat the product.
Wakefern said no illnesses or injuries associated with the apple sauce had been reported. No other products sold at the named supermarkets are affected by this recall.
Customers should check both the UPC code and best-by date on jars they have at home.
“Customers who purchased the recalled product can return it to the store for an immediate refund or replacement,” said Maureen Gillespie, a Wakefern spokesperson.
