John Jay High School junior Joanna Giordano thinks the Advanced Placement and Honors courses offered at her school give her more of an opportunity to explore a subject and have deeper discussions.
For her senior year, Giordano has opted for 3 AP and Honors courses - AP Latin and AP Calculus and an Independent Study in Music Theory.
Irina Silver-Frankel, also a John Jay Junior who lives in Golden's Bridge, is taking AP and Honors courses as well. This year she took Honors French, AP English and AP U.S. History.
"Honors is an advanced course, while AP is a college level course and some colleges allow credit for the course depending on exam grades," said Silver-Frankel.
For senior year, Silver-Frankel has opted for AP French, AP English, and AP Calculus and Honors Modern American Culture.
"Most colleges want to see at least three AP or Honors courses and frankly, these courses are more interesting," Silver-Frankel said.
Both girls are also in the symphony orchestra and play violin. Silver-Frankel does an independent research course called Humanities Research, which is a three year intense research course. Some students write a long paper or collection of papers and one is writing a fiction novel. Silver-Frankel finished in 2 years and did her paper on Foreign Policy in Korea.
In addition all the academics and cultural work, Irina is on the Varsity Swim team and Joanna plays Varsity Softball.
