Pine Bush resident Anthony Vanriper, 43, was sentenced on Tuesday, April 28, to one to three years in prison following his conviction on charges including third-degree criminal mischief, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office announced on Monday, May 4.

As previously reported by Daily Voice, Vanriper was found guilty by a jury in March after an incident on Dec. 11, 2024, that began with reports of a fight and escalated over multiple police responses.

Officers initially found Vanriper being restrained by others who said he had started an altercation. He was told to leave and released without charges. Police returned twice more in response to other complaints, including reports of property damage and threatening behavior outside a gas station.

During the third encounter, authorities said Vanriper acted erratically and refused repeated attempts by officers to calm the situation. When police moved to arrest him, he resisted, walking away and continuing to ignore commands before being taken into custody.

After being transported to the Walden Police Department, Vanriper was placed in a holding cell, where he repeatedly kicked and destroyed a toilet, causing about $875 in damage, prosecutors said.

A jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict after about an hour of deliberation.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Anthony Molina. Officials also credited the Village of Walden Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, and Town of Montgomery Police Department for their roles in the investigation.

Vanriper had been remanded to jail following his conviction and will now serve his sentence in state prison.
