Anthony Parrish, 56, was found guilty of all charges against him following a jury trial in Orange County Court on Thursday, Sept. 10, according to Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler.
The shooting happened at around 8 a.m. on June 6, 2024, when Parrish went to the victim's home in the Town of Crawford and shot him twice in the head before fleeing, prosecutors said. Despite his severe injuries, the victim managed to crawl out of the house and reach a main road, where he flagged down a passerby who called 911.
A coincidence then helped police quickly identify the shooter. The first Town of Crawford Police sergeant to respond had been at the victim's property on an unrelated matter the previous day, when Parrish was also there on a motorbike, according to prosecutors.
The wounded victim was able to indicate that the shooter was the man who had been on the motorbike.
The sergeant reviewed his body-worn camera footage from the previous day's visit, found the motorbike's license plate, and used it to identify Parrish, prosecutors said.
Police issued an alert for Parrish, and a Middletown Police officer later spotted him at a bus stop in the city.
After Parrish was detained, investigators found him with a duffel bag containing a loaded gun that was later determined to be the weapon used in the shooting, along with quantities of narcotics, according to the DA's Office.
Parrish's DNA was found on both the firearm and drug packaging, prosecutors said.
The jury convicted Parrish of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third- and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and two counts of fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Parrish was remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail following the verdict. He faces up to 25 years in prison when he is sentenced on Nov. 10.
