Haverstraw resident Anthony Mitchell, 27, was found guilty on Thursday, Oct. 29, of second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder in the July 2022 shooting that killed Treynahel Cineus, 17, of Spring Valley, Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Walsh announced.
The verdict followed a three-week trial before Rockland County Court Judge Kevin Russo.
According to prosecutors, the shooting happened on Friday, July 8, 2022, around 2:30 a.m., as Treynahel and his aunt, Rose Cineus, were parking their car at the Meadowlanes apartment complex at 150 West Eckerson Rd. in Spring Valley.
Mitchell, working with others, fired handguns toward the two as they were parking, prosecutors said. Treynahel was struck by gunfire, while his aunt survived.
Spring Valley Police officers and Hatzolah EMS personnel rushed to the scene and began trying to save the teenager's life. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
As Daily Voice reported at the time, Mitchell, then 23, was arrested on July 21, 2022, nearly two weeks after the killing.
Following the trial, jurors convicted Mitchell of killing Treynahel and attempting to kill his aunt. However, they acquitted him of two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Mitchell faces 15 years to life to 25 years to life in prison on the murder conviction, according to prosecutors. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 23.
