Anthony J. Izzo, 75, of Stony Brook, was found by a family member in the pool at his Malverne Lane home at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
Sixth Precinct officers and members of the Stony Brook Fire Department pulled Izzo from the pool and performed CPR, police said.
Izzo was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the drowning but believe it was non-criminal in nature.
Izzo was a retired NYPD chief who rose to lead the department's Organized Crime Control Bureau, according to a tribute shared by the Detectives' Endowment Association following his death.
"The Detectives’ Endowment Association mourns the sudden passing of retired NYPD Chief of OCCB Anthony Izzo, who served our city with distinction," the association wrote.
Izzo dedicated decades of his life to protecting New Yorkers and supporting the men and women of the NYPD, according to the association.
Earlier in his career, Izzo served as commanding officer of the NYPD's 115th Precinct in 1995, the precinct said in a separate memorial post.
"His leadership and dedication to the people of New York City left a lasting legacy," the precinct wrote.
The Detectives' Endowment Association extended its condolences to Izzo's family, friends, and those who served alongside him.
