Anthony Calvo, 34, was indicted on attempted murder and related charges in Nassau County Court on Thursday, April 24 in connection with the Feb. 13 attack that left a 60-year-old man clinging to life.
The victim was walking home around 5:50 a.m. from an overnight shift as a dispatcher at Long Beach Taxi when Calvo approached him from behind on Arizona Avenue and struck him multiple times in the head, face, and arm with an axe, according to the Nassau County DA’s office.
“A past workplace disagreement spurred this alleged horrific unprovoked attack that left a man with catastrophic injuries and clinging to life,” DA Anne Donnelly said.
The victim was able to drag himself to his home and bang on the door for help. He was rushed to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries and remains at risk due to the severity of his injuries.
Surveillance footage reportedly showed Calvo fleeing the scene on a white electric bicycle. When authorities executed a search warrant at his apartment on Wednesday, Feb. 19, they discovered a white e-bike and a full-face mask. He was arrested on Wednesday, March 12.
Long Beach Acting Police Commissioner Richard DePalma credited the swift work of investigators: “The arrest and subsequent indictment for attempted murder represent a critical step in delivering justice and ensuring safety for our community.”
Calvo last worked as a driver for Long Beach Taxi in 2022. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison.
